Petit Socco

30 min - 1 hour Heart of Medina

The Petit Socco, or "little market," is a small but legendary square at the heart of Tangier's medina. Once the center of the city's notorious international zone, this intimate plaza has witnessed more intrigue, creativity, and colorful characters than perhaps any other spot in Morocco.

A Storied History

During Tangier's international period (1923-1956), the Petit Socco was the epicenter of the city's famously permissive atmosphere. Banks, money changers, spies, smugglers, artists, and aristocrats all converged on this tiny square. Its cafes served as meeting points for deals both legal and illicit, while its streets hosted every vice and virtue imaginable. The square earned a reputation as one of the most colorful and dangerous spots in the world.

Literary Legends

The Petit Socco became legendary among writers and artists. The Beat Generation made it their headquarters—William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg all spent time here. Tennessee Williams, Jean Genet, and countless other creative luminaries found inspiration in its cafes. The Café Central and Café Tingis, still operating today, served as their offices and salons. Paul Bowles famously described the square's atmosphere in his writings, cementing its place in literary history.

The Square Today

While considerably calmer than its heyday, the Petit Socco retains its bohemian charm. The surrounding cafes still serve the same strong coffee and mint tea that fueled generations of writers and dreamers. Old men gather to discuss politics, tourists pause to absorb the atmosphere, and the occasional artist still sets up an easel. The square remains an essential stop for understanding Tangier's unique character and history.

What to Do

Take a seat at the Café Central or Café Tingis, order a mint tea or strong café noir, and simply watch the world go by. This is the quintessential Tangier experience—soaking up the atmosphere while imagining the ghosts of writers and spies who occupied the same chairs decades ago. From here, you can easily explore the surrounding medina streets, visit the nearby Grand Mosque, or wander up toward the Kasbah.
