Medina & Grand Socco

2-4 hours Historic Center Must See

The Medina and Grand Socco form the vibrant heart of old Tangier, where centuries of history unfold through winding streets, bustling markets, and the famous main square that has served as a gathering place for travelers, traders, and storytellers for generations.

Grand Socco: The Great Market

The Grand Socco (officially named Place du 9 Avril 1947) is the large, circular plaza that marks the boundary between the old medina and the newer parts of the city. Historically the main marketplace where Berber farmers from the Rif mountains came to sell their produce, today it remains a lively hub surrounded by cafes, cinemas, and the imposing Sidi Bouabid Mosque with its distinctive colorful minaret. The square buzzes with life from morning until late at night.

Navigating the Medina

Tangier's medina is a labyrinth of narrow streets, steep stairways, and hidden passages that can seem disorienting at first but reward exploration with unexpected discoveries. Unlike some Moroccan medinas that can feel overwhelming, Tangier's old quarter maintains a relatively relaxed atmosphere. You'll find traditional artisan workshops, hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving authentic tagines, spice sellers, leather craftsmen, and antique dealers tucked into every corner.

Literary Heritage

During Tangier's international period (1923-1956), the medina attracted writers, artists, and bohemians from around the world. The Beat Generation writers made it famous—William S. Burroughs wrote "Naked Lunch" here, and Paul Bowles lived in the medina for decades. You can still visit the cafes where they gathered and feel the creative energy that drew these legendary figures to Tangier's ancient streets.

Must-See Spots

Key attractions within the medina include the Petit Socco (the small square at the heart of the old town), the Grand Mosque, the colorful Rue des Siaghines (Silversmiths' Street), and numerous historic riads and fondouks (traditional inns). The medina gates, particularly Bab Fahs near the Grand Socco, are impressive examples of traditional Moroccan architecture and make excellent photo opportunities.
