Caves of Hercules

1-2 hours Cap Spartel Area

The Caves of Hercules are one of Morocco's most legendary sites, where ancient mythology meets natural wonder. These spectacular sea caves, with their famous opening shaped like the African continent, have captivated visitors for thousands of years.

The Legend

According to Greek mythology, Hercules rested in these caves after completing his eleven labors and before undertaking his twelfth: stealing the golden apples from the Garden of the Hesperides, believed to be located in Morocco. Another legend claims that Hercules himself carved out the caves while creating the Strait of Gibraltar, separating Europe from Africa. Whether you believe the myths or not, standing in these ancient chambers certainly evokes a sense of the mythological.

The Africa-Shaped Opening

The caves' most famous feature is the sea-facing opening, which remarkably resembles the outline of the African continent—viewed in mirror image. As waves crash through this natural window and light streams in, the effect is nothing short of magical. Some believe this shape is natural, while others think it was carved by Phoenician traders who used the caves thousands of years ago. Regardless of its origin, it makes for one of Morocco's most photographed views.

History and Geology

Archaeological evidence suggests the caves have been inhabited since Neolithic times. Stone tools and artifacts found here date back thousands of years. The caves were also used by the Phoenicians as a base for their trade routes along the African coast. More recently, the caves were quarried for millstones—you can still see the circular marks left by the cutting process on the cave walls, evidence of centuries of stone extraction.

Visiting the Caves

Located about 14 kilometers west of Tangier, near Cap Spartel, the caves are easily accessible and make for an excellent half-day excursion. The site includes a small visitor center with information about the caves' history and geology. The best time to visit is during the afternoon when sunlight streams through the Africa-shaped opening, creating spectacular photo opportunities. The surrounding coastline is beautiful for walks and offers excellent views of the Atlantic Ocean.
