American Legation Museum

1-2 hours Medina

The Tangier American Legation Museum holds the distinction of being the first American public property outside the United States—a testament to the unique and longstanding relationship between Morocco and America that dates back to the birth of the American nation.

A Historic Friendship

In 1777, Morocco became the first nation to recognize the independence of the United States, and in 1786, the two countries signed the Treaty of Peace and Friendship—America's oldest unbroken treaty relationship. Sultan Moulay Slimane gifted this building to the United States in 1821, making it the first American government-owned property on foreign soil. For over 140 years, it served as the American diplomatic mission in Morocco.

The Museum Today

Today, the beautifully restored building houses a museum and cultural center dedicated to preserving and presenting the shared history of Morocco and America. The collections include historical documents, paintings, photographs, and artifacts that tell the story of this unique diplomatic relationship. Highlights include correspondence between Sultan Mohammed III and George Washington, paintings by important Moroccan and American artists, and exhibits on the building's role during World War II.

Architectural Heritage

The legation building itself is a stunning example of traditional Moroccan architecture, featuring multiple courtyards, ornate tile work, carved plaster, and painted wooden ceilings. The structure has been carefully restored to preserve its historical character while adapting to its role as a modern museum. Walking through its rooms is like stepping back in time to experience the elegance of 19th-century diplomatic life in Tangier.

The Paul Bowles Wing

A significant portion of the museum is dedicated to Paul Bowles, the American composer and writer who lived in Tangier for over 50 years until his death in 1999. His apartment is preserved as it was when he lived there, and the museum houses an extensive collection of his books, recordings, and personal effects. Bowles' presence in Tangier drew countless artists and writers, cementing the city's reputation as a creative haven.
