Dragon Island is a hidden gem within the Dakhla lagoon—a small, uninhabited island accessible only by boat, offering pristine beaches, excellent snorkeling, and the feeling of having discovered your own private paradise.
Named for its distinctive shape when viewed from above, Dragon Island sits in a protected part of the lagoon where the water is exceptionally clear. The island is uninhabited and remains in a completely natural state, making it feel like a genuine discovery. White sand beaches ring the island, while the surrounding shallow waters range from pale turquoise to deep azure, creating a stunning natural swimming pool.
The waters around Dragon Island offer some of Dakhla's best snorkeling opportunities. The visibility is remarkable—often exceeding 15 meters—and the marine life is abundant. Schools of colorful fish dart through the seagrass beds, while larger species can sometimes be spotted in the deeper waters nearby. The calm, warm conditions make it perfect for snorkelers of all experience levels.
Getting to Dragon Island is half the adventure. The boat trip across the lagoon offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape—the desert on one side, the Atlantic on the other, and the distinctive white sands of various lagoon features in between. Keep your eyes open for dolphins, which frequently visit these waters, and the ever-present flamingos feeding in the shallows.
Many visitors combine Dragon Island with other lagoon attractions for a full day of exploration. Pack a picnic, plenty of water, and sun protection—there's no shade on the island. Swimming, snorkeling, beachcombing, and simply relaxing on one of the world's most remote beaches make for an unforgettable experience. The return journey as the sun begins to lower provides beautiful golden light over the lagoon.
