Hassan II Mosque

2-3 hours Casablanca Waterfront Must See

The Hassan II Mosque is one of the most spectacular religious buildings in the world and stands as a testament to Moroccan craftsmanship and architectural vision. Perched majestically on the Atlantic Ocean, this architectural masterpiece is the largest mosque in Africa and the seventh largest in the world.

A Monument of Faith and Artistry

Commissioned by King Hassan II and completed in 1993, this stunning mosque took over 10,000 craftsmen six years to complete. The building combines traditional Moroccan artistry with modern engineering, featuring a retractable roof that opens to reveal the sky above the prayer hall. The minaret, standing at 210 meters (689 feet), is the tallest religious structure in the world and projects a laser beam towards Mecca that can be seen from 30 kilometers away.

Architectural Marvel

The mosque showcases the finest examples of Moroccan craftsmanship. The interior features hand-carved marble columns, stunning zellige (mosaic tilework) in intricate geometric patterns, carved stucco, and painted cedar wood. The prayer hall can accommodate 25,000 worshippers, while an additional 80,000 can pray on the outdoor grounds. The floor is heated throughout, and the building includes modern amenities such as elevators and electronic doors.

Unique Ocean Setting

What makes this mosque truly unique is its dramatic location. Built partially over the Atlantic Ocean on a platform, the mosque was inspired by a verse from the Quran stating that God's throne was built upon water. Visitors can see the ocean through glass floors in the prayer hall, and the building withstands the constant assault of Atlantic waves and salt spray through ingenious engineering.
