Souk El Had is one of the largest markets in North Africa, a sprawling labyrinth of over 3,000 shops spread across 13 hectares. This is where Agadir comes to shop, and it offers cruise visitors an authentic glimpse into Moroccan daily life and commerce.
Unlike tourist-focused markets in other Moroccan cities, Souk El Had is primarily a local market where Agadiri residents do their everyday shopping. This authenticity is its greatest charm—here you'll find genuine prices, real local products, and a chance to experience Moroccan market culture as locals do. The souk is organized into sections, making it relatively easy to navigate despite its enormous size.
Agadir sits at the heart of Morocco's argan-producing region, and the souk is one of the best places in the country to buy authentic argan oil. You'll find both culinary argan oil (darker, with a nutty flavor) and cosmetic argan oil (lighter, perfect for skin and hair). The souk also sells related products including argan soaps, creams, and the traditional amlou spread made from argan oil, almonds, and honey.
Beyond argan products, the souk offers an incredible variety of goods. The spice section is a feast for the senses, with mountains of cumin, saffron, ras el hanout, and dozens of other aromatics. Leather goods, ceramics, textiles, and traditional clothing fill other sections. Fresh produce, olives, dates, and nuts are available in abundance. For unique souvenirs, look for Berber jewelry, carved woodwork, and traditional slippers (babouches).
While prices are generally fair, bargaining is expected and part of the fun. Start by offering about half the asking price and work toward a middle ground. Be friendly and patient—the process is as much social interaction as commercial transaction. Fixed-price sections do exist for certain items, so watch for posted prices. Early morning visits offer the freshest produce and a more relaxed atmosphere.
