Perched 236 meters above sea level, the Kasbah Agadir Oufella is the ancient fortress that once protected the city and now stands as a poignant memorial to the earthquake that devastated Agadir in 1960, while offering the most spectacular views in the region.
Built in 1540 by the Saadian sultan Mohammed ech-Cheikh, the kasbah served as a strategic fortress protecting the coast from Portuguese invaders. At its peak, the citadel housed over 300 people and was a thriving commercial center. The massive walls, some reaching 2.5 meters thick, enclosed mosques, houses, and a labyrinth of streets that formed a complete fortified city overlooking the Atlantic.
On February 29, 1960, a catastrophic earthquake struck Agadir, lasting just 15 seconds but claiming over 15,000 lives—a third of the city's population. The kasbah was severely damaged, and the old city below was almost completely destroyed. Today, the ruins stand as a memorial to those lost, and a large section of the hillside beneath the kasbah remains a sacred burial ground where victims were interred.
Visible from throughout the city, the hillside below the kasbah bears the inscription "Allah, Al Watan, Al Malik" (God, Country, King) in Arabic—Morocco's national motto. Illuminated at night, this inscription has become one of Agadir's most iconic images, a symbol of resilience and national pride that greets arriving cruise ships as they approach the harbor.
The climb or drive to the kasbah rewards visitors with breathtaking 360-degree views. To the west, the Atlantic Ocean stretches to the horizon with the city's famous beach curving along the coastline. To the north and east, the snow-capped Atlas Mountains rise majestically. At sunset, the views become truly magical as the sky transforms into shades of orange and pink over the ocean.
